As the final whistle blew at the state championship last year, Lakeville South girls volleyball team erupted in celebration, hoisting the trophy for the second consecutive time. Now, they stand on the brink of achieving something rare in Minnesota sports: a three-peat. The pressure is palpable, but so is the excitement.

What Happened

The Lakeville South girls volleyball team, the reigning state champions, is on a quest for their third straight state title. With a roster filled with talent and experience, they are poised to make history. Setter Kaelyn Bjorklund leads the charge, confident in her team’s abilities, yet grounded in the reality that nothing is guaranteed. "We have a little swag on our backs because we know we've done it before," she said. "But I think just knowing that nothing is given and we have to earn everything. Having that and having people come and give their best to us every time we play them, it pushes us to be better."

Bjorklund’s connection with her teammates is crucial to their success. Her primary target is Elleora Utecht, who has emerged as one of the top outside hitters in Minnesota. Their synergy has been developing since seventh grade, and it shows on the court. "From that season on, high school and club, we've been on the same team ever since," Utecht explained. "That's grown both our on- and off-court connection. We trust each other. We're just so used to each other at this point. We're pretty synced up."

Star Power

Elleora Utecht is not just a talented athlete; she brings a legacy of sportsmanship to the court. The daughter of former NFL tight end Ben Utecht, she has a unique perspective on the pressures of elite athletics. "My dad is my biggest champion; the person I talk to about all the sports stuff," Utecht shared. "We watch film together. He helps me with my mental stuff and how to overcome tough challenges. Just talks to me about everything volleyball-based. And he understands all of that at an elite level."

The Utecht family is a volleyball powerhouse. Elleora’s twin sisters, both sophomores, are also on the varsity team, contributing to a competitive yet loving atmosphere. "We get pretty competitive with each other, too, so sometimes that can be a little bit of a 'Ugh!' factor," she laughed. "But we love each other so much. And we want the best things for each other and we want to push each other. So having that in gym, I think, has been really good."

Community Support

The Lakeville community has rallied around the girls as they chase their third title. Local businesses and families have shown overwhelming support, attending games and celebrating their victories. The Lakeville Chamber of Commerce has been instrumental in promoting the team and organizing community events that bring fans together. Local establishments like the Lakeville Brewing Company and nearby restaurants have even started offering discounts to fans wearing Lakeville South gear, fostering a sense of unity and pride.

Parents, like Kristin Bjorklund, Kaelyn’s mother, have played a pivotal role in fostering the team spirit. "We make sure the girls know how much we believe in them. It’s not just about winning; it’s about building character and friendships that will last a lifetime," she stated. The sense of unity extends beyond the court, as families come together to support their daughters and each other. The Bjorklund family, for instance, often hosts team dinners that allow players to bond off the court, making their relationships even stronger.

Building a Legacy

Lakeville South’s volleyball program is not just about the present; it’s about creating a legacy. Coaches and parents are committed to instilling values of hard work, dedication, and teamwork in the athletes. The program emphasizes the importance of strong marriages and intact families, recognizing that these foundations contribute to the athletes' success on and off the court. The coaching staff has implemented mentorship programs where older players help guide younger ones, fostering leadership and responsibility.

"We want our girls to understand the importance of commitment, both in sports and in life," said head coach Megan Johnson. "These lessons will serve them well beyond high school volleyball." This commitment to character development is evident in the way the players support one another, both during games and in their daily lives. The team's motto, "Together We Rise," encapsulates their ethos, reminding them that collective effort leads to individual and team success.

Challenges Ahead

While the Lakeville South girls volleyball team is riding high on their previous successes, they are acutely aware of the challenges that lie ahead. Each opponent they face is eager to dethrone the champions, which means the pressure to perform consistently is immense. The coaching staff has been proactive in preparing the players mentally and physically, incorporating strategies to handle high-pressure situations. They have brought in sports psychologists to help the athletes develop mental toughness and resilience, crucial skills as they navigate the rigors of competition.

Moreover, injuries can pose a significant threat to their championship aspirations. The team has implemented a robust training and conditioning program to minimize injury risks, focusing on strength and flexibility. The players are encouraged to communicate openly about any physical discomfort, fostering a culture of care and support. This focus on player well-being is paramount, as the team understands that their success relies on the health and performance of each individual.

What's Next

As the season progresses, the Lakeville South girls volleyball team is focused on maintaining their momentum. With their eyes set on the state championship, they are determined to prepare for the challenges ahead. Each practice is an opportunity to refine their skills and strengthen their bond as a team. The players have set short-term goals to stay motivated, such as improving their serve percentage and communication on the court.

Looking ahead, the girls know that they will face tough competition, but they are ready to rise to the occasion. "We have to stay humble and work hard," said Bjorklund. "We can’t take anything for granted. Every team is going to give us their best shot, and we have to be ready for that." The upcoming matches against rival schools are anticipated events in the community, drawing large crowds and creating an electric atmosphere. The team is also planning a charity event to give back to the community that has supported them, further solidifying their connection with Lakeville.

The community’s support will be vital as they navigate the season. With fans cheering from the stands and local businesses backing their efforts, the Lakeville South girls volleyball team is poised to make a run for history. The journey to a third consecutive state title is not just about the trophy; it’s about the relationships built, the lessons learned, and the legacy they will leave behind. As they continue to strive for excellence, they embody the spirit of Lakeville, uniting the community through their passion for the sport.
